Charming Vintage Box Purses

I have vintage box purses on the mind. In fact, I have had vintage box purses on my mind for a long time. The obsession got serious last year when I noticed that Anna Sui had box purses on her mind as well. In one of her 2020 runway shows, the models all donned sweet purses decorated with ribbons, flowers, and pearly, vintage-style handles. Box purses gone high fashion!

The thing I find so charming about vintage box purses is that many of them are handmade by women at home or by independent woman business owners running their own purse companies. Perhaps the most famous box purses are those encrusted with plastic rhinestones by Enid Collins – a gal who started a purse business from her home and became famous.
The base of a typical box purse is often constructed from recycled materials, such as a sturdy cigar box or a vintage recipe box. With some searching, you can still find the parts to make them today. Every once in a while, there are even vintage purse parts on eBay, such as pearly purse handles similar to those of Anna Sui’s purses.
Because they are often handmade at home, most box purses are unique. Artists decorate their creations with decoupage magazine clippings and art or handprint them with flowers and animals. A brief search on Etsy will reveal an entire world of box purses you might not have known existed until now!

So, what do you think about box purses? Do you love them as much as I do? Have you ever made one? Let me know in the comment section below!
